Schande (100 x 80cm) Oil/tempera on MDF
The Wartburg in Thuringia symbolically represents, on the one hand, the revolutionary epoch of the Reformation with Martin Luther, and on the other hand, a backward-looking German nationalism, which, with the Wartburg Festivals at the beginning of the 19th century, took the idea of founding a nation-state as its starting point. It preserves the medieval romance of castle maidens, minstrels, and the singers‘ contest. The moral and virginal are celebrated, while the masculine-knightly is summoned to protect it.
Patriotism and the protection of German traditions, as well as women, have been adopted as banners by the AfD. The party does not shy away from trivializing the Holocaust and demanding a shift in memory politics, focusing instead on the National Socialist past.
The Wartburg as a tavern and a red-glowing brothel for the drinking student fraternities, as a gas and furnace chamber for the Jews. This is how „Shame“ (image title) is meant to represent and encapsulate the inner state of a German nationalism that still smolders in Germany and has gained a new face with the AfD.
