Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung/ Hommage an Arthur Schopenhauer (130 x 150cm) Tempera on canvas
Michelangelo and the Artists of the Renaissance
Michelangelo’s depiction of the human body has always fascinated me.
Art historians claim that the plasticity and dynamism of his figures are shaped by his sculptural skills. In the battle scene at the bottom of my painting, I attempted to approach his compositional style.
In terms of content, I was preoccupied with the themes of sexuality, morality, and religion.
The World as Will and Representation / Schopenhauer
A fundamental problem of human existence lies in the conflict between instinct and consciousness. Arthur Schopenhauer describes the dichotomous interplay of these two poles very pointedly in his work „The World as Will and Representation“.
Everything we perceive is merely representation, existing only in our subjective experience and shaped by our cognitive structures.
Will, or instinct, is an irrational, blindly striving principle that manifests throughout all of nature—from physical processes to human actions.
Painting Content
We humans are caught in the interplay of these two forces. A large part of our actions and perceptions occurs unconsciously. The consequences of our behavior in interpersonal and social contexts, as well as the needs and opinions we express, can have either constructive or destructive effects on our lives.
A war can be won or lost, but it always brings immense suffering. Religion can inspire hope and compassion, but it can also be used as a tool for manipulation.
This perspective on human life is what I sought to express in my painting.
